This article presents findings from a research project carried out in Germany that looked at practices of and with boys in various educational settings, ranging from early childhood education to young adult vocational education. We refer to “practices of and with boys” in order to grasp the complex dynamics of gender in boys’ lives and to avoid the problems associated with calling these practices “masculinities,” as is done in most research on boyhood. We present a model that aims to recognize both the (re-)production and the critique and subversion of gender norms and gender inequalities in practices of and with boys. Furthermore, we discuss findings related to practices of and with boys in educational institutions throughout childhood and youth, reflecting on the intersection of institution, age, and gender.
