Sarah Farmer is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. This article is part of a book project that explores the cultural, social, and political practices through which the French, in the key decade of the 1970s, responded to the dramatic transformation of rural life and landscapes brought on by the rapid modernization projects of the trente glorieuses (1945–1975).
