Neil Macmaster, Honorary Reader at the University of East Anglia (UK), is a specialist in French colonial history. He has published, with Jim House, Paris 1961: Algerians, State Terror, and Memory (2006), and Burning the Veil: The Algerian War and the ‘Emancipation’ of Muslim Women, 1954–62 (2009). He is currently researching a book on Algerian peasant society, ethnography, and French counter-insurgency in the Ouarsenis mountains between 1945 and 1958.
