Recounted through artifacts, primarily automobiles, but also photographs, video, text, and automobile related installations, Cars: Accelerating the Modern World presented a history of the automobile from its beginnings—a restored 1896 Benz—to an imagined future represented by a “flying car.” The exhibition promised to help us navigate possible car futures based on what we can learn from the past.

Robert Braun and Richard Randell are co-curators of the newly established Critical Automobility Studies Lab at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Vienna. They are joint authors of “Futuramas of the Present: The ‘Driver Problem’ in the Autonomous Vehicle Sociotechnical Imaginary” (Humanities and Social Sciences Communications, 7, 163, 2020) and are collaborating on a book to be published in 2021 by Rowman and Littlefield International, Post-Automobility Futures: Technology, Power, and Imaginaries.
