Editorial

One of the opportunities that we can offer as a journal is to publish papers delivered at conferences whose subject matter fits our overall remit. They may appear as a section within an issue of the journal which otherwise covers a miscellaneous range of topics. Sometimes, when there are sufficient materials, we invite the organizers to consider providing someone to be a guest editor so that the entire issue can be devoted to the particular conference. Some recent examples are: The State of Ladino Studies 2010/11; German Rabbis Abroad 2012; Writing Jews in Contemporary Britain 2014; Rabbis and the Great War 2015.

When we learned about the conference on Shakespeare and the Jews, held at University College London in March 2017, we enquired whether there were plans for publication. We were delighted when Dr Lily Kahn, the organizer, expressed interest and agreed to be the guest editor. After considerable meticulous work on her part, the end result is the current issue. This gives me the opportunity to thank her for undertaking this, for working so well with the editorial team, and bringing this unique collection of papers to a wider readership.

This short editorial allows me to make a small correction to the Spring 2018 issue of the journal, the memorial volume to Rabbi Lionel Blue. The contribution to the ‘Memoirs’ section by Rabbi Guy Hall (pages 61–63) should have contained the information that it was a Eulogy to Rabbi Blue delivered at his funeral, at Bulls Cross Ride Cemetery, Cheshunt, on 20 December 2016.
